About
Our Team

Garnet Squadron is a 4H club for grades 9-12 participating in FIRST Tech Challenge and based in Columbia, SC. During the active season, we build, program, and compete using a robot of our own creation in a world wide competition. In our off season, we strive to show the world and other students the joy of STEM and get our creative juices flowing by working on fun projects.

What is FIRST?

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a robotics community that prepares young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18 (PreK-12) that can be facilitated in school or in structured afterschool programs. Boosted by a global support system of volunteers, educators, and sponsors, teams operate under a signature set of FIRST Core Values to conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and showcase their achievements during annual challenges.

FIRST hosts a number of robotics programs such as the FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and the FIRST Robotics Competition. In these programs, students build, program, and compete in challenges in a worldwide competition.

Our Team

Our team, team #11444, participates in the FIRST Tech Challenge program. The University of South Carolina hosts our teams in their facilities, which allows us to use quality tools to design and fabricate our robot designs. Using aluminum and a 3D printer, we plan and design our robots to complete the many challenges that the FTC program throws at us.

Using programs such as Android Studio to code our robot, we not only create systems that allow us to drive our robot using controllers, but also to create automated programs for our robot to complete various tasks.

This, however, is only what we do during the active competition season. Out of season, we work on personal projects such as an electric bike, an air cannon and a variety or projectiles (all designed to work differently), an our latest project, "Get Teens Coding".
